The music always takes us, very far out to another place,
and a rich musical journey, takes us through time and space.

It was released in 1967 and was a tribute to a real-life woman named Suzanne Verdal. She was a dancer and artist who Cohen met in Montreal in the 1960s, and the two became close friends. She inspired the song with her bohemian lifestyle and the way she viewed the world.
Her background is French-Canadian, but her family also had roots in the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. She grew up in Montreal and went on to become a successful dancer and choreographer. After meeting Cohen, she became part of his circle of artist friends and was a source of inspiration for his music.
